Business Analyst (B&D Engineering) Level 4

How long: 18 months

Where: Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4 week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements

Salary: £25,216

What you'll need

You should already hold or be working towards a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade A*-C or Grade 4 and above in Maths and English Language, plus 2 A-Levels in any subject at Grade A*-D. Equivalent qualifications and grades, such as BTECs, T-Levels and the International Baccalaureate will be accepted. This opportunity is within TfL's Engineering directorate, so a strong interest in STEM subjects is desirable.

You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.

You must be 18 years of age by September 2024 to be eligible for this scheme. There is no upper age limit to apply.

Job Overview

Our Business & Digital (B&D) engineering team devise innovative solutions across the business on a variety of programmes for the future - for our customers, our colleagues and for London. 
Our B&D engineering teams - 
·    Problem-solve by understanding TfL's complex business needs; 
·    Support the management of TfL's assets throughout their lifecycle by the efficient use of engineering information; 
·    Exploit the use of digital engineering, helping programmes to use data effectively to make decisions and collaborate with our supply chain;
·    Identify opportunities to do things differently and work with partners inside and outside TfL to turn those opportunities into reality

In this role, you'll be supporting our Business Engineering team to provide optimised engineering solutions for TfL's uniquely complex issues. 
There are many projects across Business Engineering, such as finding and implementing efficiencies in maintenance programmes; and technical engineering on initiatives to support TfL's NetZero aims. All these are key in enabling TfL to meet our financial, operational and sustainability goals -helping to ensure that TfL is a strong, green heartbeat for London. These could not happen without the involvement and groundwork undertaken by a Business & Digital engineers.

What you'll be doing

Your 18-month development programme will be made up of 3 to 5 exciting placements, each 3-6 months long. These will include placements within the Business & Digital team and then 2 to 4 placements in other TfL Engineering teams. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for a successful career. We also understand that everyone's career is different, so every apprentice's journey is unique. 

Within the Business & Digital team, you will be gaining valuable insight in core Business Analyst skills used within Engineering, such as learning how to elicit, document and manage business requirements; modelling and simulating, research and write business engineering processes.  You will also learn about digital engineering and the digital twin, along with asset condition management. These skills will enable you to identify enhancements for the success of TfL and our customers - all the while you will develop valuable experience in engaging and managing stakeholders.

Your remaining placements can be aligned to your interests to support you in your future career. Possible placements within Business & Digital could be with Business Engineering, Digital Engineering and integration, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Asset Condition Management and more. 

Outside Business & Digital, your placements could be with the programmes and projects working to upgrade and replace our assets and update how we maintain and operate our assets. You could also work with our discipline engineers, gaining an insight into the unique challenges associated with assets such as rolling stock, signals or bridges & structures. Your Scheme Sponsor will ensure your placements are relevant and support your development.

Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could choose to further your career in engineering by taking up a position within the Business & Digital team. However, your newly acquired knowledge and skills will enable you to operate in multiple departments within or outside of Engineering, depending on your career aspirations. TfL is a large and diverse organisation, and the breadth of the Business Analyst role means there will be many opportunities to progress, both in the Business & Digital team and wider TfL structure.
