Transport for London

How it works

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is enforced using fixed and mobile cameras which will read your vehicle's registration number plate as you drive within the zone.

This will then be checked against a database of registered vehicles which meet the LEZ emissions standards, are exempt from the charge or are registered for a 100 per cent discount.

If your vehicle doesn't meet the LEZ emission standards or qualify for an exemption or discount, you will have to pay the daily charge.

Vehicles registered in Great Britain

For vehicles registrered in Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland), this database is compiled using data from:

Vehicles registered outside Great Britain

For vehicles registered outside Great Britain (including Northern Ireland), the database only includes details of vehicles that have been registered directly with TfL.

If your vehicle meets the LEZ emission standards or qualifies for an exemption or discount, you must register your vehicle with TfL before driving into the zone otherwise you will have to pay the daily charge or risk incurring a Penalty Charge

Penalties

If a vehicle driving within the zone is identified as not meeting the LEZ emissions standards and no daily charge has been paid, a Penalty Charge Notice may be issued to the vehicle's registered keeper, who will be responsible for paying it.

TfL works together with a European debt recovery agency and has established links with many European vehicle licensing agencies. We will always issue and recover penalties against vehicles registered outside Great Britain wherever possible.
