999 award winners
Introduction
Below is the category information for the four 999 awards. These awards are for the 999 emergency services organisations who, working in partnership with Transport for London, operate cycle based emergency response teams. These are the City of London Police, London Ambulance Service, Metropolitan Police Service and St Johns Ambulance.
Beyond the Call of Duty award
Winner
Eme Nwaofidel, Longbridge Safer Neighbourhood Team, Metropolitan Police Service
This award was presented to the cyclist or cycle team who has demonstrated excellence in improving community relations through the use of the bicycle in his/her profession, and whose achievements have displayed innovation, initiative, leadership and actions beyond the daily requirements of the job. The individual or team's achievements demonstrate:
- Special initiatives/events to increase communication and closeness with the community
- Building respect and increasing the community's confidence to feel safer on the streets
- Increasing knowledge and understanding of the diversity of community groups
Cycling Advocate award
Winner
Marcus (Mark) Phillips, London Fire Brigade
This award was resented to the higher level officer who has effected the biggest change in cycling within their organisation this year. The nominees demonstrated:
- Determination in establishing and/or expanding cycle response teams
- Promoting the greater use of bicycles throughout the organisation and in mainstream operations
- Raising its profile as an innovative and effective means of work vehicle
- Increasing the scope for training and recruitment of cycle teams
Cycling Works award
Winner
Shooters Hill Safer Neighbourhood Team, Metropolitan Police Service
This award was presented to the cyclist or cycle team who has demonstrated excellence in the use of bicycles in day-to-day duties. The nominees displayed exemplary innovation, initiative, leadership and actions such as:
- High level of cycle skill whilst negotiating route to incident as per specialist training
- Achieving target response times to incidences and providing lifesaving attention or crime intervention
- Effective use of bicycle to make area safe in which to prevent any emergency situations, or to carry out medical attention or policing duties
Cycling Development award
Winner
Metropolitan Police Service
This award was presented to the emergency services organisation which has done the most to develop cycling within their organisation in the last year, contributing increased public support and respect for cycling and the 999 services by taking actions such as:
- Development of new, or finalisation of existing, package of standards in cycle training, clothing, equipment and maintenance
- Propelled the use of cycles from a bottom up concept to a corporate model, incorporated into the mainstream operation
- Rapid expansion of cycling team and establishing necessary support systems
- Introduced use of cycles into previously non-cycling departments or divisions of organisation
