Transport for London

Platform for Art re-brand

London Underground (LU) has changed the name of its art programme to Art on the Underground. It has also gained a new graphic identity.

LU is one of the most unusual and widely visited venues for art in the world, providing passengers with an ambitious and successful combination of visual art, poetry and music.

Art on the Underground's programme will expand to include a permanent collection, permanent art commissions across the network, and ongoing temporary art works.

A number of art events will take place from 25 November that demonstrate the scope of the programme. These include:

  • The daily distribution of free posters from huge stacks at five London stations. The artists involved are Mark Titchner, James Ireland, Klega, Layla Curtis and Katy Dove
  • A day-long forum exploring art in the public realm, with respected speakers from the worlds of art and architecture at the London Transport Museum on 27 November
  • The launch of Platform for Art: Art on the Underground, a comprehensive survey book from Black Dog Publishing
  • An invitation-only launch event on 27 November at the London Transport Museum

Artist Mark Titchner, commissioned by Art on the Underground in 2004 and nominated for the Turner Prize 2006, says: "It’s very exciting to see the LU art programme step up a gear. My commission for London Underground at Gloucester Road Tube meant that my work was seen not only by a huge number of their passengers, but also gave me an opportunity to develop work on a scale unlike anything I had previously made."
