Paul Catherall: London linos

30 April - 25 May 2002

Piccadilly Circus underground station.

Paul Catherall is a London-based printmaker and illustrator who has been working for over ten years in advertising, design and publishing.

He is currently preparing for his third solo exhibition at Clapham Art Gallery.

Catherall is well known for his depictions of London landmarks. Using a clean, sharp palette inspired by commercial art from the 1930s to the 1960s, his images read as a contemporary identity of London through its current skyline.

Linocuts are a traditional form of relief printmaking. Sections are cut away from a lino block and ink is applied to the remaining surface areas. This is then printed directly on to the paper using the lightest tone first.

The sections which are to remain that colour are subsequently cut away from the lino block, gradually reducing the surface area. The next colour is then applied, repeating the process until the darkest tone has been printed.

Catherall is an expert in linocuts, harnessing their distinctive style to create these dramatic images of London.
