Stories from Gilded Pavements

Kings Cross, London Bridge, Charing Cross, Tottenham Court Road, Marble Arch, Stratford, Mile End, Highbury & Islington, Liverpool Street, St Pauls, Westminster, Leicester Square

24 January – 31 March 2005

Platform for Art is delighted to present an exhibition of photographs across 12 central London Tube stations, from the collaborative projects of the last 2 years by Australian born photographer Anthony Luvera and over 200 homeless and ex-homeless people in London.

Stories from Gilded Pavements comprises 30 photographs which shake up perceptions of homelessness. The striking exhibition is a mixture of images from Luvera’s series Assisted Self-Portraits, and Photographs taken by his collaborators of their everyday experiences.

Equalising the traditional photographer / subject relationship, Luvera devised the method for the creation of Assisted Self-Portraits to give the participant a greater level of control, collusion and power than is usually afforded in the photographic portrait sitting. In doing so the participant becomes more than the subject and Luvera, as the ‘photographer’ essentially facilitates the portrait making process.

Stories from Gilded Pavements is an insightful presentation of homeless and ex-homeless people portrayed in a way previously unseen, by simply allowing the individuals to speak for themselves..

Anthony Luvera was born in Perth, Australia and currently lives and works in London. www.luvera.com
