Birdwoods

10 January – 17 March 2003
Gloucester Road Underground station

Unique metal sculpture has been installed at Gloucester Road Underground station for the latest exhibition in the Platform for Art series.

The exhibition of steel sculptures is the largest collection of work by the highly acclaimed Birdwoods co-operative ever mounted in London.

It will be on view to Underground travellers from 10 January until 17 March.

Birdwoods was established 10 years ago by artist Louise Stobart.

Taking her inspiration from the work of metal sculptor, Arthur Azevedo, Stobart began making designs for sculptures of birds, animals and insects.

To bring the work to life Stobart established the Birdwoods co-operative organisation – a team of people who now export their work to collectors all over the globe.

Birdwoods sculptures are made from recycled 40 gallon oil drums.

Paint and residue are burnt off and the drums are cut and straightened before the shapes are cut from metal and beaten into shape and welded together.
