Martin Barron South Wimbledon Underground station

Wimbledon School of Art and Platform for Art collaborate on innovative ‘Motion’ project, July 2005

Exciting new work from students at Wimbledon School of Art is brightening large empty window spaces in a vacant retail unit at South Wimbledon underground station. The works, each of which uniquely responds to the fitting theme of ‘Motion’, are the result of an ongoing partnership between the School and London Underground’s Creative Communities project, which is part of Platform for Art’s programme.

From July – December 2005 people travelling through the ticket office at South Wimbledon underground station will see innovative work from Martin Barron, a recent graduate from the School’s BA Fine Art, Painting department. His untitled work is filling a vast, redundant space of ten window panels at the vacant unit.

This is the second artwork to be displayed in the ambitious space; the first was a piece titled ‘Holiday’ - a collaboration between BA Fine Art, Painting graduates, Ed Everett and Julia Parry.

Each of the students has created a large image that wraps around the front and side of the empty windows. Designed to create maximum visual impact, it presents an intriguing, alternative narrative in an environment usually populated with commercial messages.

Hayley Skipper, External Projects Co-ordinator at Wimbledon School of Art, comments:

“Wimbledon School of Art is delighted to be involved in this innovative project with London Underground. We believe that working on live projects of this kind are an essential ingredient in the professional development of our students. This project has presented each of the students involved with the opportunity to realise and exhibit significant works on an ambitious scale, in a prominent and professional setting.”

This is the second year that students from Wimbledon School of Art have been involved with Platform for Art. The success of the previous project in 2003 has encouraged the development of this partnership in 2005.
