1. About the Service
1.1 The Service aims to provide real-time bus and river bus arrival information to members of the public using SMS, web and mobile web services.
2. About the SMS Service
2.1 SMS is a form of communication available on nearly all mobile phones and allows users of mobile phones to send and receive text messages or "texts". You can use this SMS Service by sending a text from your mobile phone to the following number: 87287. This form of number (known as a 'short code') may look unfamiliar to some users, but these numbers are used across many businesses to deliver similar text messaging services. Customers on overseas networks need to use +44 7797 800 287 to receive live bus/river bus information. Visually impaired passengers will be able to use the text-to-speech facility on their mobile phones to get this information.
Bus arrival information:
You will need to include a special bus stop code in your text that identifies where you are. These codes are displayed on bus stops above the timetable across the TfL network, or can be found by searching our web services from your PC on countdown.tfl.gov.uk or mobile web via your Smartphone or web enabled phone on
River bus arrival information:
You will need to include a special pier code in your text that identifies where you are. These codes are displayed on posters located at each pier.
2.2 Your text to us should look similar to this:
2.3 Upon receiving the text, TfL through its service provider will send you a text message back containing the arrival time(s) of the next bus(es)/river bus(es) at your bus stop or pier, based on the special bus stop/pier code you provided. The arrival time that we send to you will be based on real-time information rather than the time shown on a published timetable. The text that we will send back to you will look similar to this:
2.4 If you would like more information on the SMS Service or you have any questions about it, please visit our website at www.tfl.gov.uk/Countdown, or speak to one of our customer service advisers on 0843 222 1234. You will pay no more than 5p per minute if calling from a BT landline. There may be a connection charge. Charges from mobiles or other landline providers may vary.
3. The charges you pay to use the SMS Service
3.1 We will provide the SMS Service to you at a charge of 12 pence per text over your standard network rate. This charge may change in the future, but any change will be noted here and publicised by TfL. Texts via overseas networks are charged at the network's standard roaming rate only, but are limited to five per day. Please see tfl.gov.uk/terms for more details. The overall cost of sending a text may vary depending on the contract you have with your mobile network operator. You should check with your operator if you are unsure of the amounts charged to you for sending and receiving texts.
3.2 You will not be charged by us if:
3.2.1 you do not receive a text from us using the SMS Service;
3.2.2 our system is not working. Your mobile network operator may still charge the standard network rate for sending a text.
3.3 Each request you make for bus or river bus arrival information using this SMS Service will be treated as a one-off transaction. You will only be provided with bus/river bus arrival information relating to the specific text you send to us. The SMS Service is not an agreement to send to you further texts and does not operate as a subscription service.
3.4 The SMS Service is provided by us for use only in the United Kingdom. You cannot use this service if you are outside of the United Kingdom.
