Modifying a vehicle
The emissions standards of your vehicle could be improved so that you do not have to pay the daily charge. Options include:
- Fitting approved pollution abatement equipment or
- Converting to an approved alternative fuel or
- Fitting a cleaner replacement engine
Fitting approved pollution abatement equipment
It may be possible to fit approved pollution abatement equipment to reduce your vehicle's particulate matter emissions sufficiently to meet the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) emissions standards.
TfL only accept modifications that have been certified by a TfL-approved supplier. Find out more about fitting approved pollution abatement equipment and the suppliers.
Converting to an approved alternative fuel
Certain commercial vehicles may be able to be converted to operate on less polluting fuel types such as liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or liquefied/compressed natural gas (LNG/CNG).
Vehicles with conversions to other fuels or that run on bio diesel are not deemed to meet the required LEZ emissions standards.

Vehicles registered in Great Britain
If pollution abatement equipment has been fitted or a gas conversion has been made to your vehicle, you will need to have it inspected by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). After a successful test, VOSA will issue either a Reduced Pollution Certificate (RPC) or a Low Emissions Certificate (LEC).
Please note, holders of an RPC or LEC will not need to register their vehicle with TfL as their details will be passed on to TfL by VOSA. For more information please visit the Transport Office website.
Vehicles registered outside Great Britain (including Northern Ireland)
Operators of vehicles registered outside Great Britain (including Northern Ireland) need to register with TfL. You will have to provide evidence of the engine, the modification(s) and the resulting particulate matter emissions.
