Cycle considerately

Considerate cycling

If you cycle considerately, you are more likely to be treated well by drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists, making your journey easier and more fun. Following the hints below will make your ride on London's roads and shared-use paths more pleasant.

Bicycles are legally vehicles - you're entitled to be on the road but must follow the same rules as drivers

Red lights are not optional - running red lights is risky and unfair on other road users

Be fair and stop for pedestrians at lights and crossings when it is their turn to cross

Make eye contact - this ensures other road users see you as a person and makes them more likely to be considerate towards you

Communicate with other road users - use hand signals when changing lanes or turning

Stay off the pavements - unless marked for use by cyclists, they are for pedestrians only

Ride carefully on shared paths - go slowly and remember that pedestrians always have priority

Use your bell to let pedestrians know you're there
