Cycle training

Cycle training is a great way to gain the skills and confidence to enjoy cycling in London. It's available locally, often free, and helps everyone to be happier, safer riders.

We work with all the London boroughs to organise and fund free or subsidised cycle training for adults and children.

Adult cycle training

Cycle training

I'm a cyclist (and driver!) who has never cycled on the roads in London so the Lambeth cycling training was perfect for me in that it gave me top tips of what to watch out for on the roads. Mays Al-Ali, Clapham

You can get excellent personalised cycle training through your local borough. It is very low cost or even free, and is offered by qualified National Standards instructors.

Child cycle training

Kids cycle training

I think it's important for kids to be responsible for themselves, and to learn to be independent. Mine love using their bikes to get to see their friends, and Bikeability will give them the chance to understand how to cycle safely. London mother

Cycle training helps children stay safe on London's roads so they can really enjoy getting out and about on their bikes.

All London boroughs offer schools free child cycle training. Contact your local school to find out what's on offer. If they don't run any training, why not ask them to contact their local training officer about setting some up.

You can also organise training through independent cycle training companies.

What to expect

All children's cycle training in London meets National Standards for Cycle Training. The award scheme for these standards is called Bikeability - the 'cycling proficiency for the 21st century'.

We are working with the boroughs to make Bikeability the standard for child cycle training.

National Standards and Bikeability levels

Level 1 teaches basic bike control skills in a safe, off-road environment and is essential preparation for higher levels

Level 2 introduces on-road cycling with other traffic. After completing level 2, you know how best to make journeys on quieter roads

Level 3 teaches  how to best cycle on busier roads and manage complex junctions. After completing Level 3, you will be able to cycle anywhere in London
