Quantity Surveying – London Underground

Apply now

Our underground system dates back to 1863. So, one of the biggest challenges we face is upgrading our existing infrastructure. We've also got to continue running an efficient service. That makes this an exciting time to be part of TfL. You'll contribute to our development programme, whilst we transform the Tube and build an underground network that's fit for the 21st century.

Join the Quantity Surveying scheme for London Underground and you'll play a valuable role in a number of high profile and complex projects. These could include the modernisation of Tottenham Court Road, the £500m redevelopment of Victoria Underground station, or the Connect project - improving the communications network on the Underground. We'll encourage you to apply your theoretical knowledge and make a significant contribution to critical projects.

Placements

Experiencing a variety of projects, you'll have the chance to work on Public Private Partnership (PPP) and Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts, and across other areas of TfL, especially in the second year. You'll also work towards your Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) chartership. Each placement will be structured to support your personal development needs, and will include:

  • Construction processes for engineering projects, internally and externally
  • Contract administration
  • Decision-making and the preparation of cost estimates
  • Advising on construction, planning, regulations and standards
  • Design processes from conception to implementation

Operational placements

You'll also get a feel for how we do things on an operational level, with practical experience of working in one of London Underground's services. Whether it's trains, stations or service control, it'll prove invaluable for your success on the scheme and throughout your career. Our Operational Learning team will make sure you've the safety critical qualifications, people management skills and technical knowledge you need. They'll also shadow you to make sure you enjoy and make the most of your placement.

You'll be contracted to work a minimum 35-hour week. Depending on which department you work in, your hours will vary. Office-based placements will generally involve working during usual office hours. Your three-month placement in an operational environment may involve varied hours, including weekend working and following shift patterns, dependent on your role.

Further education and professional studies

We take your development seriously, and will support and encourage you with your professional studies. You'll receive hands-on experience on some of our key projects, as well as the professional development you need to work towards achieving RICS chartered status.

Duration

Two years.

Entry requirements

You'll need a minimum 2:2 in an RICS accredited quantity surveying degree or postgraduate diploma. An understanding and commitment to quantity surveying in this field is vital, although we're more interested in you as a person than any specific experience.

If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.

Applications

Our graduate applications open on Monday 5 October 2009 and we recruit on a rolling basis. This means that when we have sufficient number of applications to fill positions for particular schemes, we will then close that particular application track. Therefore, applying as early as possible is vital, particularly if you want to apply for your preferred scheme.
