Predicting travel across the capital

I'm currently working in policy analysis in the planning directorate. We input and analyse results from demand forecasting models to help us identify priority areas for future transport schemes and planning priorities. We use predicted factors such as increases in population and employment so that we can forecast where people will be living and working in future years. We can do really exciting things like put Crossrail into the model to see how it will effect crowding on the Tube and the rest of the rail network. We have to rely on big assumptions, so we work out many different scenarios.

Having an input into the Mayor's Strategy

At the moment I'm involved in the analysis of results to inform input into the Mayor's Transport Strategy. It involves looking at issues such as mode share changes, distance travelled, speeds, congestion and crowding on the public transport and highway networks in future years until 2026. A variety of future scenarios are inputted in the models and we compare them against policy objectives to identify where we think schemes will work, or where there may be gaps that need addressing. Though my input may be small, the work I do will feed into the Mayor's strategy - which is a lot of responsibility.

Shaping placements that are right for me

The TfL graduate scheme was particularly relevant to me as it allows so much flexibility to pursue placements in areas of personal interest and you get a lot of support from staff and peers to assist you in planning your career. The sponsored MSc was also a large draw for me. You have real flexibility with your placements. I started with my host directorate and my next stop will be working on secondment with one of the London Boroughs. This was something I really wanted so I spoke to various contacts I'd made and have made it happen.

A graduate scheme with London at its heart

The best thing about working for TfL is the amount of support you get and the number of high-level and interesting projects you get to work on. The organisation is very keen to support you and gives you lots of opportunity to train and attend interesting events, seminars and debates. Plus you know that pretty much all of what you do will impact either directly or indirectly on the lives of Londoners. I would definitely recommend TfL to other graduates - it's challenging, but that's what makes it a good scheme. I have met some great people, really got to see London and it's good to know that your work is (hopefully!) contributing to improving the city.
