Transport Planning – Surface Transport

Apply now

London is growing faster than any other UK city. But this rapid expansion isn't without its unique transport challenges. How do we meet the needs created by more people and more jobs? How do we make transport less polluting, more sustainable and more accessible? How do we enable the efficient movement of people and freight today? Working in Surface Strategy, London Buses or London Streets, these are just some of the questions you'll help us to answer.

Placements

Placements usually last between four and six months. Internally, they can include:

Further education and professional studies

In your first year you'll be encouraged to apply for further formal qualifications to start in your second year - in particular the MSc courses in Transport Planning run by Imperial College London or Westminster University. TfL will pay all the fees of these courses and provide you with day release to attend.

We'll also support you to become a member of a professional body, such as the Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT), the Transport Planning Society (TPS) or the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) - and to work towards a formal professional qualification with them.

Duration

The first two years are usually spent in four placements of six months. In your third year you'll no longer be on the graduate scheme but you will be offered a permanent role in one of the TfL Surface teams, whilst being allowed to complete your MSc.

Entry requirements

You'll need a degree (2:1 or higher) in a subject relating to transport planning, such as geography, economics, maths and stats, civil engineering, environmental or social sciences or planning.

If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.

Applications

Our graduate applications open on Monday 5 October 2009 and we recruit on a rolling basis. This means that when we have sufficient number of applications to fill positions for particular schemes, we will then close that particular application track. Therefore, applying as early as possible is vital, particularly if you want to apply for your preferred scheme.
