Software Engineering – Surface Transport
London's roads are busy. Very busy. With thousands of vehicles travelling around the Capital every single day, we need signalling and communication systems that are more and more sophisticated. Software engineering at TfL is about looking to the future as much as managing the present. It's about thinking strategically.
On the scheme you'll help answer some vital questions. What could the Capital's traffic operations systems look like in ten years' time? And what are the technological developments needed to make those changes happen?
Placements
You'll spend two years in the Directorate of Traffic Operations (DTO) on a variety of two to six month placements. These could include:
- DTO Urban Traffic Control Systems and Software
- DTO Urban Traffic Control Network Operations
- DTO Technology Delivery Group
- London Underground Information Management
Further education and professional studies
We've ensured that the programme will give you the training and experience needed to meet the requirements for membership of the British Computer Society. That means you'll soon be working towards becoming a chartered IT professional. You'll also have the chance to take part in a series of internal and external training courses.
Duration
Two years.
Entry requirements
You'll need a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant discipline, such as computer science or electrical engineering, ideally accredited by the British Computer Society or the Institute of Engineering and Technology. You'll also need the following (these can be achieved on or off your degree course):
- One year's programming experience in C/C++, Java or C#
- Understanding of all stages of the software development life cycle
- Understanding of software development methodologies (Waterfall/SSADM/RAD)
- Understanding of software change control and configuration management processes
- Experience of writing requirement specifications and design specifications
If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
Applications
Our graduate applications open on Monday 5 October 2009 and we recruit on a rolling basis. This means that when we have sufficient number of applications to fill positions for particular schemes, we will then close that particular application track. Therefore, applying as early as possible is vital, particularly if you want to apply for your preferred scheme.
