Modelling and Transport Planning - Corporate
Our Group Planning team provide TfL with a world-class transport planning function. We're capable of delivering integrated transport strategies and developing major multi-modal infrastructure projects. So, we know you'll want to make a genuine contribution to our work from the moment you arrive.
Join our Modelling and Transport Planning scheme and you'll work on live projects and schemes. You'll provide analysis that will impact on the provision of transport services for all those who visit, live and work in London. It'll demand strong mathematical and analytical skills, not to mention bags of enthusiasm.
We've carefully planned the scheme for you to develop a broad grounding in transport planning and develop expertise in forecasting, analysis, appraisal and modelling. You'll also enjoy variety that includes transport system planning, travel demand data, planning tools and evaluation, and the development of transport network plans and strategies for TfL.
You'll even have opportunities to experience the wider TfL community, such as Surface Transport or London Underground. During your training you'll develop the right skills and knowledge to progress to a management position (where you'll ideally use modelling skills) once you've finished.
Placements
Placements normally last six months and include a range of different projects and programmes, giving you the chance to engage in real work and get an understanding of how each business area delivers its aims.
Policy Analysis
This area applies strategic transport models to develop future travel demand forecasts, and has a number of teams covering the following areas:
- London-wide and sub regional modelling
- Monitoring and reporting
- Strategic land use assessments and policy studies assessment, eg behavioural/travel trends/economic
We also work closely with other teams in Planning and in particular the Strategy & Policy directorate.
Strategy and Policy
Developing transport policy for TfL, we've a number of teams covering the following areas:
- Developing sub-regional plans for London
- Providing strategic advice and coordinating TfL input to government consultations and GLA strategies
- Producing feasibility studies of potential long term major projects
- Leading on securing planning consents to enable scheme delivery by TfL
- Establishing a centre of excellence for design issues within TfL
Currently, our main role is to ensure the delivery of the Mayor of London's Transport Strategy. So, you could be defining cross-modal and issue-specific policies, including analysis of data, model application and interpretation. Or you could be liaising with consultants, other areas within TfL, development agencies and local authorities.
Borough Partnerships
This area assesses the transport implications of planning applications. A placement here will see you develop a general knowledge of TfL's interfaces with London's boroughs, and an understanding of their practical application in specialist areas. There are a number of teams for you to join:
- Borough Liaison acts as the link between local government stakeholders
- Borough Funding manages allocation of TfL funds to the boroughs
- Land Use Planning ensures planning approval decisions meet transport needs
- Borough Interchange manages investments at all London interchanges
Further education and professional studies
After your first year you'll be given the option of day release to study for an MSc in Transport Planning at Imperial College London or Westminster University. You'll also be encouraged to become a member of a recognised professional body, such as the Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT) or the Transport Planning Society (TPS).
Through the wider TfL graduate programme, you'll also develop business and management skills. This could include short courses in subjects such as project management, influencing, negotiation and presentation skills, or other relevant subjects.

Approximately two years.
Entry requirements
We ask for a minimum 2:1 degree in a subject related to transport planning and modelling, such as maths or statistics, physics, engineering, geography, economics, environment or social sciences.
If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
Applications
Our graduate applications open on Monday 5 October 2009 and we recruit on a rolling basis. This means that when we have sufficient number of applications to fill positions for particular schemes, we will then close that particular application track. Therefore, applying as early as possible is vital, particularly if you want to apply for your preferred scheme.
