Mechanical Engineering - London Underground
On the world's oldest and busiest underground railway, inherited infrastructure is being upgraded and renewed with state-of-the-art technology and 21st century design.
Record levels of investment - £30bn in 30 years - and a complex network of Public Private Partnership (PPP) companies and Private Finance Initiative (PFI) projects are transforming the Tube for the future of London.
However, during this major work, we still have a commitment to keeping our network utterly reliable and flawlessly safe for the three million passengers who use it every day. This presents us with mechanical and engineering challenges that dwarf those of almost any other UK business.
Placements
The emphasis of the scheme will be on rolling stock and track engineering systems. There will, however, also be plenty of chances to get experience in a number of different areas on a variety of projects, both internally and externally.
During years one and two, we'll tailor your placements to your personal and professional development needs. Internal placements could include:
- Rolling stock engineering
- Track systems engineering
- Asset management
- Lift and escalators
- Cooling the Tube project
- Station operations
You'll also have the opportunity to work in an external placement with London Underground partners, including Metronet Rail, Docklands Light Railway and London Rail. They'll offer hands-on experience and help to develop your practical engineering expertise, as well as other skills:
- Presentation and design reviews
- Scoping large-scale projects
- Testing and compliance of standards
- Supervising track works
- Project managing the delivery of rolling stock
- Designing tracks
Further education and professional studies
You'll be encouraged and supported to apply for Chartered membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
The scheme aims to develop engineers that are not just technically competent, but also have good leadership, management and interpersonal skills. We'll help you achieve this through a combination of experience-based learning and structured technical, commercial and management training.
Then, once you've completed the scheme, you'll start in an assistant engineering role - going on to a senior engineering role.
Duration
Four years.
Entry requirements
We ask for a MEng degree in mechanical engineering (or a closely aligned discipline), ideally accredited by IMechE.
If you have a BEng degree, there may be opportunities for candidates to join the graduate training scheme with the possibility of pursuing a part time Masters degree later.
If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
Applications
Our graduate applications open on Monday 5 October 2009 and we recruit on a rolling basis. This means that when we have sufficient number of applications to fill positions for particular schemes, we will then close that particular application track. Therefore, applying as early as possible is vital, particularly if you want to apply for your preferred scheme.
