The Oyster card and Congestion Charge. You might know what they are, or even how much of an impact they make to London's transport systems. But who keeps them running? Information Management (IM) has a major influence, taking responsibility for complex projects that range from one-off to ongoing programmes. This scheme offers the chance to sample all that's involved in providing an information technology business service. A technical background won't be essential - but the ability to look at technology from a strictly business perspective will be.

You'll enjoy variety across areas such as:

  • Strategy and Planning
  • Technical Architecture Design
  • Programme and Project Delivery
  • Service Management

Placements

Here at TfL, we deliver a range of transport modes. You'll get involved with the IM departments of them all. Working on a rotational basis, your placements will span a variety of information and technology services. They could include some or all of the following:

Business Development/Business Partners

If Information Management is to make a noticeable impact on our business, we have to engage with the various departments and teams throughout TfL. That's the job of Business Development. Its team of business relationship managers are crucial in helping IM to be a strategic partner - and in making sure we offer as much value as we can for the investment that's put into IT.

Planning and Business Management

TfL has 28,000 people doing a huge variety of jobs, each needing a wealth of expertise to do them. Improving your project management skills, you'll work with the training, communications and intranet development teams to ensure that all our people are equipped with the IT competence they need. Managing and delivering this IT training to people across all TfL modes, you'll:

  • Learn to understand and accommodate operational restrictions
  • Manage and monitor intranet content
  • Adhere to government and corporate standards and policies

Service and Operations

From a user's desktop to communicating across TfL to one of our data centres supporting SAP, Service and Operations provides and operates all IT services and applications within TfL. We also provide services to Service Level Agreements, either through our own team or via third parties (eg O2 who supply our Blackberry service), all managed to stringent commercial contracts.

Everything we do is geared around delivering superior customer service through strong ITIL (a library of best practice in IT service management) based processes. It could be helping our customers become more productive by looking at the performance of their applications. Or improving the experience of reporting a problem to the helpdesk - and its speedy resolution.

Project and Programme Delivery

The Project and Programme Delivery team is there to make sure our IM programme and project delivery function matches TfL's business and operational demands - and that it's done in the best way throughout. As part of this, you'll also help us with SAP programme management, focusing specifically on SAP industrialisation. In other words, you'll be making what we have today work even better.

Strategy and Technology

Developing Strategy is only part of what you'll do here. You'll also need to ensure that everything we do is in line with TfL's and the Greater London Authority group's strategic goals. As a centre for IT enterprise design and innovation, we've the expertise needed to make sure TfL's enterprise architecture and related technology services are running smoothly and effectively - including strategic business system platforms, technical and functional infrastructure, and security.

IM Strategic Investment Programme (IMSIP)

The IM Strategic Investment Programme is investing £88m over three years. It's forecast to deliver £348m in savings by 2015. You'll be working to make sure that it meets its targets. The manifestation of a series of infrastructure improvement strategies, it includes end-user computing data centres and hosting application portfolio management, networks, collaboration, email archiving and security.

Category and Vendor Management

We manage major contracts and use a range of suppliers to help deliver TfL's IM needs - improving reliability, integration and agility for all our customers here. This team oversees the interaction between IM and Group Procurement, to help manage contracts with these vendors and suppliers. That involves working alongside Group Procurement to make sure we're delivering against legal compliance, convergence and sustainability objectives.

Further education and professional studies

Working with senior management throughout the scheme, you'll be given practical advice, ideas and guidance on how to progress. You'll also have reviews and objectives to support your development at every stage. And, after around 18 months, we'll see what your aspirations are to ensure you get the ideal role with us once you've completed the scheme. You'll also enjoy technical, business and management training opportunities that will eventually lead to chartered IT professional status.
