One of Surface Transport's key objectives is to "Keep London moving" and is achieved by reducing congestion and improving surface public transport.
London's population is expected to grow by 800,000 by 2015. To help us cope with this increase, Surface Transport is delivering unprecedented changes to systems across the Capital.
Our Streets Technology Delivery group designs, develops and integrates Intelligent Transport Systems and products to meet the increasingly challenging demands of monitoring journey time and road congestion on London's busy road network including over 6000 traffic signal sites. By knowing the current state of the network a well informed London Traffic Control Centre can implement in Real Time planned network changes to "Smooth Traffic Flows".
Some of our recent graduates have been involved in the following projects:
Next generation CCTV systems
Delivery of a digital CCTV system that includes image recognition and automated incident and congestion detection technology such as Image Recognition Incident Detection, signalled to the control centre by automated reporting. Our graduates have also contributed to the deployment of latest IP-based field communication systems covering the Greater London area.
Traffic management and control systems
DTO has installed, and operates the largest real-time adaptive Urban Traffic Control system in the UK. The current challenges we are facing include the upgrade of our unique communication system to the latest IP wireless and fibre fault tolerant and network resilient systems.
Traffic signals
We are currently deploying the latest low-energy, low-emission, high-light output traffic control signals (e.g. LED, pedestrian countdown).
Our traffic controllers boast accurate detection of pedestrians and vehicles; with new systems under development including vehicle classification (eg bus, tram, lorry, car, bicycle, etc) through next generation SCOOT and emission detection using the latest magnetic, microwave and imaging technology.
Streetscape
Development of on street traffic equipment such as the Bench Controller that aesthetically meets the environment needs whilst providing maximum functionality.
Placements
Over a two-year period you'll complete several two to three month placements. These will typically include:
- Fault control centre and maintenance
- Urban traffic control
- Traffic signals design and installation
- Development and research of communications
- CCTV
- Street equipment and detection systems
- Electrical design
- Systems and software
There will also be an opportunity to take part in a placement within a different TfL mode or directorate.
Further education and professional studies
At the end of the scheme you'll have used your academic knowledge to apply and expand your skills to deliver transport products and improvements for the benefit of people across London.
Training is aligned to the requirements for chartered status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) where TfL has accredited status. With the knowledge, responsibility and experience you gain from the scheme you'll have demonstrated your ability to work at the standard required to become a Chartered Engineer.
Duration
Two years on scheme placements and a full time permanent position in a Electronic Engineering role.
Entry requirements
A 2:1 or better honours degree in electrical or electronic engineering (or equivalent), accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a passion for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and want to make a real difference in London.
To obtain chartered status, further learning may be required.
If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
