We've a massive challenge ahead of us: modernising the world's oldest metro system - whilst continuing the smooth running of the 1 billion journeys taken on the Tube every year. It's a major responsibility - and one that we'll fulfil using the expertise of our engineers.
The scheme will give you a well-rounded understanding of the role of a specialist engineer within one of the most exciting environments in the Capital: London Underground. It's accredited by the IET, and it's your chance to apply academic skills to practical engineering situations. You could be working on state-of-the-art electronic signalling, control and communications systems, or projects that include:
- Station systems and services
- Power engineering
- Signalling
- Rolling stock
- Communications
- Special projects
Delivering vital services to the travelling public takes a wide variety of roles - not just within London Underground but across TfL and external partners too. You'll experience first hand how they all work together to deliver them to the highest standard.
Throughout the programme you'll benefit from practical experience and structured technical, commercial and management training - and see your responsibilities grow with your achievements.
Placements
You'll enjoy a mix of technical and business-based placements to give you a broad grounding in engineering and a good understanding of our business processes. Internal placements could include working with:
- Specialist engineers on strategy, train and station systems
- Safety, quality and environmental teams
- Railway operational managers
- Transport planners
- Marketing and commercial experts
- Other TfL transport modes to gain working knowledge and experience
External placements will include working with key engineering suppliers and external partners on:
- Planning and maintenance
- Design, maintenance and management of standards and specifications
Support
Throughout the scheme, you'll be supported by your scheme sponsor and a professional mentor - who'll both be Chartered Engineers. We'll also team you up with informal 'buddies' who have similar backgrounds, interests and responsibilities to you. And a dedicated Learning & Development team will be on hand to provide all you need to develop an action plan that meets your unique technical and professional interests - and ultimately helps you to achieve Incorporated or Chartered status. After the scheme and based on satisfactory performance we'll then offer you a role that perfectly matches your skills and experience to our business needs.
Further education and professional studies
The scheme will lay the foundations for you to achieve eventual Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), or the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE).
Duration
Two years of rotational scheme placements.
Entry requirements
An IET accredited MEng (2.1) in electrical, electronic or mechatronic engineering (or a related degree) is required for entrants aspiring to CEng within five years, whilst a similarly accredited BEng (2.1) is satisfactory for Incorporated Engineer candidates.
If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining. These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
Applications
Our graduate applications open on Monday 5 October 2009 and we recruit on a rolling basis. This means that when we have sufficient number of applications to fill positions for particular schemes, we will then close that particular application track. Therefore, applying as early as possible is vital, particularly if you want to apply for your preferred scheme.
