Important points:

  • The Mayor, working with boroughs and businesses will explore further ways of reducing emissions from freight vehicles through the use of eco-driving and options such as consolidation centres. The Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) for commercial fleets will promote best practice in this regard
  • Transport for London (TfL), working with boroughs and stakeholders, will explore ways of reducing emissions from freight vehicles. There will be a focus through the new Mayor's Transport Strategy on reducing the impact of freight and service vehicles, for example through the promotion of greater use of rail and river and exploring the use of breakbulk  and consolidation facilities
  • Working with London boroughs, the GLA group and the construction industry will encourage implementation of the Best Practice Guidance (BPG) for construction and demolition sites across London
  • The Mayor, working with the private sector and the freight industry, will promote the uptake of cleaner freight vehicles through green procurement standards to provide support for upgrading older vehicles.Currently tyre and brake wear account for approximately 45 per cent of PM10 emissions from road transport sources across Greater London
  • The London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS) has played an important role in delivering quieter streets at night since its introduction in 1985. The Mayor is keen to work with London Councils to explore options for the scheme so that it continues to reduce night time noise but also plays a part in reducing emissions
