London Freight booster

Unique training on the challenges of driving commercial vehicles in London

There are two parts to the London Freight Booster (LFB) training - drivers attend a week-long course before putting the theory into practice when they return to work.

By successfully completing both parts, the drivers will gain a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), meaning their efforts to improve are formally recognised and rewarded.

Course details

As well gaining a nationally-recognised qualification, the LFB will help your drivers have a better understanding of current industry best practice and regulations. The training covers the following modules:

  • Customer service skills
  • Maintaining the safety and security of the load
  • Contributing to reducing the threat of terrorism
  • Sharing London's roads safely with others
  • Pre and post-journey procedures
  • Transporting goods and materials in London
  • Route planning in London (includes Congestion Charging, Low Emission Zone and London Lorry Control Scheme etc.)

Drivers will be given a multiple-choice assessment at the end of each module to test their knowledge. By passing the assessments, they'll gain credits towards the LFB NVQ qualification.

How to enrol

Guidance on the enrolment process for the LFB will appear here shortly.

In the meantime, if you have any queries regarding the training, please email:

Paying for the course

Drivers who do not hold a Level 2 NVQ

If your drivers don't hold a Level 2 NVQ qualification, and complete both the classroom and workplace assessments, then funding for their attendance on the course will be provided through the Government's 'Train to Gain' initiative.

Drivers holding a Level 2 NVQ

If your drivers already hold a Level 2 NVQ, they are eligible to enrol, but your company may have to fund their attendance.

Drivers whose companies are based in the EU

If your company is based in the EU and is a FORS member with a UK-registered office, the driver needs to have lived in the EU for at least three years, and be registered as an employee of the UK office to receive 'Train to Gain' funding. They must also hold a UK National Insurance Number.

If your company is based in the EU and is a FORS member but does not have a UK registered office, and the driver doesn't have a UK National Insurance Number, they may still enrol, but the training may have to be funded by your company.
