Junior Road Safety

Junior Road Safety cartoon kids Hundreds of schools across the Capital are involved in the Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) scheme, which gives pupils an active role in road safety education and the chance to get serious messages across in a fun way!

If your school hasn't yet joined the scheme, talk to your local borough road safety officer (link to borough safety officer contacts page) who will help you get started. You can also find more information below.

The JRSO's role

Schools usually appoint a couple of JRSOs from Years Five or Six. Their role is to spread road safety messages to your school community by:

Each JRSO receives an activity pack to help them get started, along with a bag of goodies! Download the activity pack:

School guide

A teacher or other school helper acts as a school guide to offer advice and support to the JRSOs.

Once you've recruited the JRSOs, you can work through the JRSO pack with them, help develop ideas and give practical support and encouragement for tasks.

Remember that the ideas and activities in the pack should give the JRSOs a good starting point, but the scheme is really flexible. Encourage them to come up with their own ideas that might be more suitable for your school.

Meet your JRSOs regularly and set tasks or check they have set realistic deadlines for themselves. Download the school guide:

Join the scheme

Before you start, have a chat with your borough road safety officer about the scheme. They can support you throughout and provide extra information and advice.

Once you've chosen your JRSO, invite the road safety officer to your school so they can talk about the scheme and give the JRSOs their pack.
