Countdown

Countdown is an electronic information display system that gives people waiting at bus stops real-time information on bus arrival times.

The Countdown system helps take the uncertainty out of waiting for buses, as passengers know exactly when their bus is due to arrive.

Countdown features real-time information for routes serving a particular bus stop. In addition to showing the order in which buses will reach a stop, they show their destinations and the number of minutes until their expected arrival. The signs also display special messages about traffic delays or planned roadworks.

How does the system work?

Technology fitted on buses allows a central system to receive regular updates from each bus about its current location. Bus operators can then monitor exactly where a bus is and use the information to control services more effectively.

To date 2,000 displays have been installed.

Going forward

The current system that supports Countdown is being replaced with a new system to bring even more benefits to passengers. As well as being more reliable, the Countdown signs will provide information in both audio and visual format. It will incorporate GPRS data (mobile phone technology), GPS location (satellite based) and WiLAN (short-range, high-speed data).
