Step-free access to platforms 1 to 4 (Metropolitan line) will be provided by an over-bridge from the Bakerloo and Jubilee line ticket hall.
Two new lifts will link the new over-bridge to platforms 1 to 4, and also provide step-free access to platform 5 (Circle line and Hammersmith & City line) via an existing passageway from platforms 1 and 2.
Two additional lifts will be installed at the west end of platforms 5 and 6 (Circle line and Hammersmith & City line).
We will continue to explore ways of improving accessibility to the Bakerloo and Jubilee line platforms at this station.
Benefits
The proposed works will improve service and accessibility to passengers, especially those with restricted or reduced mobility, and those with buggies, pushchairs, luggage, or heavy shopping.
Providing lift access on the west end of platforms 5 and 6 will require changing parts of Marylebone Road. One change will be replacing the triangular building.
The design of the new building will aim to preserve the architectural character of the area, while enhancing the visual environment. This structure will serve as an emergency exit from the station.
Next steps
Details of the proposal for platforms 1 to 4 (Metropolitan line) have been approved by Westminster City Council, in accordance with London Underground's permitted development rights.
In order to carry out works providing step-free access to platforms 5 and 6, London Underground will submit applications for planning and listed building consent from Westminster City Council, and a Transport and Works Act Order from the Secretary of State for Transport.
If London Underground is granted the necessary permissions works could begin as early as summer 2009, with main construction starting in 2010.
