Transport for London

Background

Tube platform at Victoria With an Underground station, bus station, National Rail station and taxi rank, Victoria is one of London's main transport areas. The Underground station is used by 80 million people every year.

Two thirds of all public transport trips through Victoria use the Underground. Addressing problems and opportunities in the Underground has a major impact on the interchange overall.

Congestion in the Underground

By 2016 we expect 84,000 people to be using the station during morning peak hours

The Underground station is currently heavily congested during peak periods, resulting in frequent crowd control measures to keep passengers safe. In the morning peak hours (07:00 - 10:00) the congestion is so severe that passengers are regularly held behind the ticket gates or outside the station.

By 2016, demand is forecast to rise by around 20 per cent, with use of the station forecast to grow from 70,000 customers during the morning peak to 84,000, and from 80 million to around 100 million each year. The upgrade is urgently required to reduce existing station congestion and meet future demand.

Other London Underground work at Victoria

Our proposals will incorporate the planned station modernisation work (previously committed under the Public Private Partnership contract), and will be delivered as part of the upgrade construction works.

Other developments in the Victoria area

There are several redevelopment proposals from land owners in the Victoria area, including Network Rail, Land Securities and CIS AXA. Victoria Station is an essential catalyst to area regeneration and we will continue to work with these land owners.
