Shepherd's Bush (Central line) station closure
This station will close for major improvement works on 2 February 2008 and reopen in October 2008. Improvements include a new ticket hall, new escalators and a more modern station. Further information is available on the Southern Interchange page. You can use Journey Planner to find alternative routes.
The development
Westfield London, the £1.6bn retail and leisure development at White City, is being built on a 46 acre site just north of Shepherd's Bush. Spanning 1.5m square feet, the development will be supported by vital transport investments to encourage people to use public transport. It is expected 60 per cent of visitors will use public transport to reach the development. The regeneration scheme will lead to 4,000 jobs in a previously disadvantaged area.
Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, said: "The new world-class stations at Shepherd's Bush and Wood Lane will bring real benefits to White City and its neighbouring areas".
The developer of the project, Westfield, has invested £170m in transport improvements. These include:
- A new station on the Hammersmith & City line to be called Wood Lane
- A remodelled Shepherd's Bush Central line station
- A new bus station
- A new modern transport hub to the south east of the development at Shepherd's Bush called the Southern Interchange. This will offer Tubes, buses, trains, taxis and cycle routes
- The creation of a new Overground station on the West London line providing a south to north link which can, in due course, be opened up further to the north
As part of our £10bn Investment Programme in improving London's transport, we are investing in Shepherd's Bush Central line to provide congestion relief and step-free access. A station modernisation project is been funded through the Public Private Partnership.
White City Central line station is also being refurbished and should be complete in autumn 2008.
In line with the Mayor's transport strategy, the development contributes to the increase in the capacity, efficiency and quality of London's transport system to provide the world class system the capital needs.
The project reinforces our ambition to lead the way to a first class transport system for a sustainable 21st century city.
Westfield London - the retail and leisure development
There will be four main high street stores (Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Waitrose and Next), 265 smaller retail units and a wide selection of cafes and brasseries. The scheme will have:
- A two-level retail and a mezzanine floor
- A new luxury area within the centre dedicated to luxury and design fashion brands
- A 14 screen cinema
- A new library and children's nursery
- Affordable housing schemes which will deliver over 200 new homes
