Tottenham Court Road
This is alongside plans to create a more pleasant local environment with wider pavements, better cycling facilities, bus improvements and a new public piazza.
It is a scale of investment not seen for decades and will dramatically improve one of the most congested parts of the transport network, bringing benefits to residents and businesses and will help to encourage further investment in the area.
A significant amount of preparatory work has already been done to divert utilities including water and gas. The next stages of the Crossrail and Tube schemes are about to take place.
A number of organisations will also be carrying out projects in the area, including Cross London Rail Links (CLRL), the London Borough of Camden and Westminster City Council.
Tottenham Court Road station upgrade
Improving and upgrading stations is a key part of the Transforming the Tube programme. At some stations, like Tottenham Court Road, this means major work to increase capacity.
Work has begun and the station will be fully upgraded by 2016, in time to meet the estimated demand of over 200,000 journeys per day once Crossrail is built.
The upgraded station will have new entrances, step-free access from the street to the platforms and interchanges and a ticket hall six times the size of the current one.

Crossrail
Crossrail will be a new high-frequency and modern railway from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. Running through central London, Tottenham Court Road will be a key point on the route.
There will be 24 trains an hour in each direction in the morning and evening peak period through Tottenham Court Road station, providing substantially more passenger capacity to relieve overcrowding.

Context reports
The Crossrail Parliamentary Bill received Royal Assent on 22 July 2008, after completing all its parliamentary stages, becoming the Crossrail Act 2008. The Act gives permission for Crossrail to be built, operated and maintained. It also gives London Underground permission to rebuild the Tube station at Tottenham Court Road.
An outline of the works taking place within Camden and Westminster is set out in the context reports below. These reports give a description of the works and set out a future programme for the requests for approval from Camden and Westminster Councils for the detailed planning required under the Crossrail Act.
