Rail stations
Over recent years, TfL has invested more than £20m in facilities at stations and on trains to improve safety and security and provide more comfort during journeys.
These facilities include:
- CCTV and Help points linked to staffed control centres and improving lighting levels
- Improved waiting rooms and platforms enhancements
- London Rail is working to provide a more secure and safer network
- Better travel information, including real-time travel information and improving the quality of public address systems
- Increased capacity on Silverlink Metro routes
Passenger safety
London Rail is working to providing a safer, more secure travelling environment, while improving journeys and accessibility in the Capital.

First Great Western
London Rail has invested approximately £1.25m to upgrade passenger facilities at the following stations:
Acton Main Line, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway, Drayton Green, Castle Bar Park, South Greenford, West Drayton, Southall, Hanwell and Hayes and Harlington
These enhancements include:
- New or upgraded CCTV, monitored 24-hours-a day by a central control centre and Help points at all stations within the GLA area
- Improved real-time travel information, enhanced lighting, improved public address systems and new waiting rooms
Southeastern
- In 2004/5, TfL invested approximately £800,000 in delivering upgraded CCTV, lighting and Help points on the route between London and Hayes (Kent)
- Improved facilities for the disabled were installed at Hayes and Ladywell stations
- In 2005/6, all stations on the three routes between London and Dartford (via Charlton, Sidcup and Bexleyheath) received new CCTV and passenger Help points
- All other stations will benefit from better lighting standards and 12 other stations, including Denmark Hill, Orpington, Brixton and Bromley North, will benefit from CCTV
- All CCTV and Help points will be monitored 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week from a newly created control centre at Blackfriars
One
- London Rail is investing a total of £1.6m over a two-year period. A total of 61 four-car trains are expected to have CCTV installed by the end of 2006
- One is investing £311,000 in 2006/07, plus project management costs and ongoing maintenance over the next five years
South West Trains
- London Rail has invested a total £1.5m for 91 four-car trains to cover the purchase and installation of CCTV for passenger safety and security
Silverlink Metro
- A total of 26 trains will have CCTV installed following £502,000 funding from TfL London Rail. This covers the implementation and maintenance for the first three years of operation
- The number of peak services on Silverlink metro routes has increased following a £800,000 investment as part of TfL's Investment Programme
- The West London Line, North London Line and the Gospel Oak to Barking line have 15 additional peak rail services per week. The services operate every weekday between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction (West London Line), with some direct trains between Clapham Junction and Stratford and additional trains between Gospel Oak and Barking
- London Rail is working with the Department for Transport, local authorities and developers to open two new stations on the West London Line at Shepherds Bush and Chelsea Harbour (Imperial Wharf). These stations, which are expected to open in 2007, will be served by trains running between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction
Joint security initiatives
Over the last two years, TfL London Rail has worked in partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP) and Silverlink Metro to deliver some of the following initiatives and facilities:
- TfL is sponsoring over 100 additional police officers to patrol stations and trains across London's rail network
- TfL investment has delivered additional BTP accommodation at Highbury & Islington
- TfL is also investing in an anti-graffiti initiative on Silverlink Metro routes
