Next steps
Work on phase three (Brixton Central Square) began in June 2009 and will last for around 18 months. This page will be updated with details of any disruptions to traffic as the project progresses.
November 2009
- Works along the Effra Road footpath will continue. A temporary footpath and alternative routes have been provided for pedestrians
- Week commencing 9 November: Footway works will commence along the west side of Effra Road, south of St Matthew's Road
- Sunday 15 November: at 6am, the gyratory at Brixton Hill will go from a one-way traffic system to a two-way traffic system
- Police personnel will facilitate the traffic
- Permanent and semi-permanent road signs and markings will show drivers where they should be going and how the layout will work
- All lanes of the gyratory will be open to traffic - The left turn from Brixton Road into Coldharbour Lane will be closed permanently and a new pedestrian 'green man' traffic signal phase will be introduced across Coldharbour Lane
- Permanent u-turn ban from Brixton Hill into Effra Road will become operational
- The pedestrian crossing on Brixton Hill from Lambeth Town Hall to St Matthew's Church will be reinstated
