Benefits
It has high accident levels and acts as a barrier to pedestrians and a poor enviroment for the local community.The scheme will significantly improve the road for local residents and road users. It will reduce the number of accidents in which people are injured by about one third. It will provide significant improvements to the local environment and streetscene.
Improvements for drivers
- Improved junctions to accommodate traffic flow and safety for pedestrians
- Selective road closures and banned turns on and off side roads to improve road safety
- Dedicated lanes for right-turning traffic off the main road
- Improved road signs, markings and lighting
- Anti-skid surfacing in critical areas
Improvements for cyclists
Dedicated cycle routes along the northern side of the road that will link with existing cycle networks at each end of the scheme will be provided.
Improvements for pedestrians
- Pedestrian crossings across all roads at major junctions
- Tactile paving for people with visual impairments
Improvements for bus users
These will include new bus lanes on the approaches to Green Lanes junction to improve bus journey time reliability.
Improvements for local residents
- Junction design to accommodate traffic flow and traffic calming measures on side streets to encourage traffic on residential streets back onto the main road
- Low noise surfacing on main road
- Planting of semi-mature trees and shrubs and new grassed areas alongside the road
- Improvements to street lighting
- Properties along side the road returned to long term sustainable use
