What conditions apply when choosing a place to visit?
In order for a venue or event to be eligible:
- It must be located within the Greater London Authority area
- It must fall into one of the defined categories of cultural activity
- Your visit must be related to academic study, rather than being a recreational activity
Further information on these conditions can be found in the answers to other questions within this topic, or in the scope document.
What kinds of places can we visit?
In order for a venue or event to be eligible it must fall within one of the following categories:
Animal parks and zoos
Areas of cultural interest (eg China Town)
Artist's studios, arts centres, design studios
Buildings of architectural or environmental interest
Cinemas, concert halls and theatres
City farms, commons, heaths and parks
Film studios, galleries, museums and print works
Sites of archaeological, environmental or religious interest
Occasional venues
This covers events taking place for a limited time (for instance, at a town hall, community centre, high street, shopping centre, etc).
If the place you want to visit falls into more than one category, simply indicate that which you feel represents the best fit. Provided the place can legitimately be placed into at least one of the above categories, it will be deemed eligible under the terms of the scheme.
Why are visits limited to places of cultural or educational interest?
The aim of the scheme is to make these places available to children who may otherwise not have been able to make the trip due to the cost of travel and also to increase attendance and understanding of these places.
It is not the intention that the scheme be used to facilitate visits to places such as recreational or sporting facilities, or trips of a sightseeing nature. Applications concerning such visits do not fall within the scope or spirit of the scheme and will not be accepted.

Why do we have to specify the relevance of the visit in supporting the National Curriculum?
In view of the fact that you can visit a broad range of places, it is important to ensure that the original intentions of the scheme are not undermined. The emphasis is therefore based towards the relevance of the visit to study at school.
You are required to specify which area(s) of the National Curriculum the trip will support, and to give brief details of the relevance of the visit.
We would remind you that it is not the intention that the scheme be used to facilitate visits to places such as recreational or sporting facilities, or trips of a sightseeing nature. Applications concerning such visits do not fall within the scope or spirit of the scheme and will not be accepted.
