Children's Traffic Club

The Road Safety team has recently launched the Children's Traffic Club in London. And for the first time, thanks to financial backing from TfL, it is totally free to all 3-year-olds in the Capital.

What is the Children's Traffic Club?

The Children's Traffic Club (CTC) teaches road safety to pre-school children. CTC is based on the principles that children can be best influenced when they are very young and that good habits established early can last a lifetime. It is a well researched and evaluated educational road safety programme, that has proven to reduce accidents.

Once registered, parents receive a series of six illustrated books with stories to read and fun activities to work through with their children.

Importance of CTC for London

Over the last three years, 1,935 children have been killed or seriously injured on London's roads. With areas of the country where the Club has already been running reporting a 12 percent reduction in overall child casualties, it should help us achieve our target of 50 percent reduction by 2010.

History of CTCs

Children's Traffic Clubs began in Scandinavia in 1969. In the first 10 years, Norway reported a 20 per cent lower casualty rate amongst club members and Denmark and Sweden had a 77 percent reduction in casualty rates for 4 to 6 year olds.

So, the Children's Traffic Club is proven to help in reducing child casualties.
