A world class Tube for London

With over 3.5 million journeys made each weekday, and more than one billion journeys every year, the work to renew the world's oldest metro system is needed now more than ever.

New trains New trains New trains

As a passenger you are witnessing the biggest transformation in the Tube's history. We are busy rebuilding the entire network, from tracks to trains and signals to stations.

It's going to take time to bring you the world-class network you deserve - about 10 years in fact - and we'll be honest, you will experience some disruption as we carry out improvements. However, we'll keep you fully informed about what's happening, and recommend you always check services before you travel.

Line improvements

Track and signalling might not get you going, but once we've renewed them:

  • You won't have to wait as long for a train as we can run more trains per hour
  • You'll enjoy a smoother, faster and more reliable journey

Your trains take quite a pounding each day, so we're going to be providing brand new trains on some lines, and extra carriages or refits on others.

Station improvements

As we get to work on each station you'll enjoy:

  • More pleasant stations - we'll be giving most a facelift by 2012, restoring and protecting the heritage of old stations while completely modernising others (such as King's Cross St. Pancras)
  • Better access from street to train as we gradually install lifts, introduce wider ticket gates and change platforms
  • Enhanced security
  • Improved customer information

Key facts:

  • The Tube upgrade programme will deliver nearly 30 per cent more capacity across the network
  • If we don't upgrade the Tube, capacity would decrease by 30 per cent as more people use an ageing network
