Step-free access
Benefits
Step-free access stations have lifts or ramps so that passengers don't have to use escalators or stairs.
As well as increasing accessibility for Tube passengers with disabilities, step-free access provides benefits for other passengers with reduced mobility, including:
- People with children
- People carrying heavy luggage or shopping
- Older people
- People who prefer to use lifts
Step-free access stations
There are currently 58 Tube stations with step-free access, and the number is growing. Check our step-free Tube guide for details of all step-free stations.
Unfortunately we have had to defer a number of other step-free schemes due to budget constraints - see our Business Plan for 2009/2010 - 2017/18 for more details.
However, more stations will become step-free over the coming years as we undertake major redevelopment work at key stations, including major interchanges such as Blackfriars, Farringdon, Victoria and Tottenham Court Road.
