Barclays Cycle Hire expansion to south west London

The Mayor of London has approved plans for the expansion of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme to south west London.

We will also be introducing more docking stations to the existing area covered by the scheme.

The south west expansion is set to launch in late 2013, with all extra docking stations expected to be in by spring 2014.

The expansion will build on the popularity of Barclays Cycle Hire and improve the availability of bicycles and docking points.

Thousands of new bikes

This will result in more than 2,000 new bicycles and around 5,000 additional docking points, almost half of which will be south of the Thames.

As of December 2012, there have been 18 million hires since the launch of the scheme.

The average number of weekday hires went up by 50 per cent from 20,000 to 30,000 following the launch of the east London extension early in 2012.

With the south west expansion and introduction of new docking stations within the existing area we expect between 250,000 and 300,000 additional Barclays Cycle Hire journeys will take place each month.

Which areas will benefit?

The south west expansion of the scheme will include parts of Wandsworth, Hammersmith & Fulham, Lambeth and Kensington & Chelsea.

We have been working with the boroughs to identify more than 200 suitable locations for docking stations and to develop the design and layout of the expanded area.

Public information sessions took place in October 2012, and planning applications for the new sites are being prepared and submitted.
