The scheme will improve crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists and ease traffic congestion.
There will be new signal-controlled pedestrian- and cyclist-crossing facilities as well as a new junction design to improve traffic flow.
Construction is scheduled to finish in December 2011.
Benefits
Pedestrians and cyclists
- Safer controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings
- Removal of street clutter on the southern side of the A406 North Circular Road
- Automated pedestrian crossings during the Jewish Sabbath will remove the need to operate equipment
Motorists
- Road repaired and resurfaced using high friction material to reduce the likelihood of accidents
- Quicker journey times through the junction for all vehicles
- Reduced queue lengths on most approaches
Environment
- Renewed signage and lighting
- No significant environmental impact predicted
- Landscape improvements including new, replacement trees to create a general woodland area to the south and a refreshed area to the north
Some trees were removed from Brookside Walk and Charter Way so the road could be widened, but most trees were kept and the largest trees preserved where possible. Japanese Knotweed in the Brookside Walk area was treated to prevent further growth.
Project update
- All signals at the junction are switched on and the new road layout is operational
- Right hand movements that were banned during construction are lifted - please pay careful attention to the new road layout and the signs that are in place
- Until completion of the project, night time works at Henlys Corner will take place from 19:00 to 05:00 - our contractors are working with the local borough to minimise disruption
Next phase
- On 21 and 22 December, the overhead gantry signs will be installed. This will require an overnight closure of the A406 on each night, in each direction
