Tramlink improvements
How you will benefit
- A smoother and quieter journey, particularly on corners
- A reduction in noise and vibration from passing trams for local residents
- Faster journeys - we will lift speed restrictions on some sections of track
Timetable for upgrades
We're planning the following work:
- Wellesley Road, track replacement - July / August 2009
- East Croydon, track replacement - July / August 2009
- Cherry Orchard Road, drainage replacement - August 2009
Disruption to tram services - 23 July to 31 August 2009
Improving your travelling experience
TfL took over the running of Tramlink in June 2008. Between now and 2015, we will spend £24m upgrading tracks and adding more carriages.
We are also looking at other ways of improving journeys and so we will be carrying out a study during summer 2009. We will work closely with councils to identify their priorities.
Background
Our programme of maintenance includes work such as grinding the rails to ensure the smooth, safe running of trams.
We need to replace rails regularly, which requires significant long-term planning and careful coordination with councils to manage traffic in the areas where we are working. We sometimes need to close roads.
Where possible we will carry out track replacement during the school holidays while the tram system is quieter.
Contact
There is a 24-hour helpline for anyone living or working in properties affected by the work. Call 0800 731 9401 (free from landlines; mobile charges vary).
Whenever there is a possibility that work will be noisy or require night-time lighting, we will write to neighbouring properties to give advance notice.
