Circle line

Completion date: 2016

  • Capacity Increase: 65 per cent
  • 53 new trains

Transforming the Circle line

Our upgrade of the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines includes the oldest section of the Tube - from Paddington to Farringdon. It will take place in three stages: a new route, spacious new air-conditioned trains, and a new signalling system.

From 13 December 2009 the Circle line will be extended from Edgware Road to Hammersmith, along the Hammersmith & City tracks. Find out how this might affect your journey.

Benefits

  • More frequent trains between Edgware Road and Hammersmith - running every five minutes
  • More reliable and evenly spaced trains
  • A quicker return to normal service after disruption

From 2011 we will be introducing 53 new seven-car trains which will feature:

  • Air conditioning
  • Walk-through carriages
  • Wheelchair areas
  • Wider doors and walkways
  • Easier access between train and platform
  • Better audio and visual information systems
  • CCTV
  • An energy-efficient braking system

The line currently runs six-car trains, which have a 17 per cent lower capacity than seven-car trains.

By 2013 all the new trains will be in use on the Circle line.

Once the new enhanced signalling system is introduced by 2016, capacity will have increased by 65 per cent.
