Northern line
Completion date: January 2012
Transforming the Northern line
A high-tech signalling system and a brand new control centre will allow us to run more trains on the Northern line - much closer together and at higher speeds.
The line is the busiest on the Tube network. It carries around 750,000 people each day on 91 trains and across six branches.
The upgrade will reduce journey times by around 18 per cent and increase capacity by 20 per cent.
By 2018 we plan to partly separate the line so that all trains from Morden run via Bank, and all trains starting at Kennington run via Charing Cross. This would allow us to run 28-32 trains an hour on all branches, compared with 20 an hour today and 24 after the current upgrade.
