S stock is the new train currently being introduced to replace trains on all the sub surface lines.

It will exist in two varieties: S8 an eight-car version operating only on the Metropolitan line and S7 a seven-car version operating on Circle, Hammersmith and City and District lines.

Every axle of the train is motored, maximising acceleration rates and also improving braking capability.

As with the 2009TS the door are electrically operated, however on the S Stock the doors are screw driven instead of arm operated. The doors have obstacle detection and sensitive edges.

The S Stock is unique as it's the first walk-through gangway train on the Tube - the inside of the train is one continuous length, providing improved capacity, security and passenger flow.

It is also the first and only train on the Tube to have saloon air conditioning.

Traction is provided by IGBT driven AC asynchronous electric motors from a 630V supply and the train is capable of regenerative braking at 790V. In due course, power upgrades on the line will increase the line voltage to 750V allowing regenerative braking at 890V. This significantly improves the energy efficiency of the train

Braking is controlled by the latest technology, Knorr Bremise's EP2002 system which employs data bus links along the train to improve brake effectiveness taking into account a wide range of parameters.

The S Stock uses the tripcock train protection system traditionally used by London underground, however an upgrade will install the Bombardier Cityflo 650 signalling system by 2018.

This will enable automatic train protection and operation.

Total seating capacity per eight-car train is 306 with another 36 tip-up seat and four wheelchair spaces (or an additional 14 tip-up seats). Total standing capacity per eight-car train 697, making a total of 1003* per train.

Total seating capacity per seven-car train is 256 with another 24 tip-up seat and four wheelchair spaces (or an additional 14 tip-up seats). Total standing capacity per seven-car train 609, making a total of 865* per train.
