1992
- Central and Waterloo & City Lines
The 1992 Tube stock was built by Adtranz and was the outcome of trials of three prototype four-car trains of 1986 Tube stock, two of which were built by Metro-Cammell and one by BREL Ltd. These prototypes were also used experimentally in passenger service on the Jubilee Line.
These trains trialled a number of modern features for use on the Underground such as electronic traction control and a fully integrated train control and management systems.
Following trials an order was placed with BREL Ltd, which later became Adtranz, for 85 eight car trains ordered. A further order was placed for an additional 10 two car units to replace the Rolling stock on the Waterloo & City Line.
These were sold onto Network South-East, returning to London Underground ownership when the Waterloo & City Line transferred under its control. Both sets are identical, except that those trains on the Waterloo & City Line are not fitted with Automatic Train Control equipment.
Trains were delivered from 1992 onwards, entering service from spring 1993.
The body shells are made from welded extruded aluminium sections. The twin sliding doors, plus one single door at each end of each car, are wider than any used previously on Tube stock.
Each door leaf is 832mm wide, and the doors are externally hung. In cab closed circuit television is provided for platform observation, being designed for one-person operation and automatic train operation.
The car interiors have longitudinal seating only. Perch seats are also provided at the car ends.
