Safety
London Underground's safety management system, with that of the system in Hong Kong, is the best in the world. That's been achieved through a safety regime that has been continuously developed over the past 15 years.
London Underground helps over three million people to travel safely around the Capital each weekday and about the same number each weekend, resulting in nearly 1,000 million customer journeys each year on the Tube network.
Operation of the network involves a variety of hazards that give rise to safety risks which need to be suitably controlled and progressively reduced. These risks affect members of the public and those who operate and maintain the Underground, much of which is around 100 years old and for which customer demand continues to increase.
Investing in safety
The Underground network continues to age and requires more investment. To enhance the reliability, safety and capacity of the Underground, we have embarked on a new era of major investment through the Public Private Partnership (PPP), Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts and our own investment programme. These are designed to provide stable and sufficient funding, immediately and over the long term, so that the Tube network is progressively restored to provide a world class service.
As we deliver these major investment programmes, while continuing to operate our services, we give high priority to all aspects of safety to ensure that the current very high level of safety is gradually improved.
In short, the Tube provides a system where the average passenger would have to travel an average of 300 hundred million tube journeys before being involved in a fatal accident.
