Transport for London

Private Finance Initiative

Before the Public Private Partnership (PPP) was implemented, LU entered into a number of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts designed to carry out specific improvements to the Tube.

The two key contracts that remain separate from the PPP are Power and Connect.

Power

EDF Energy Powerlink is responsible for the delivery of LU's power supply, the majority of which (including all traction power) is now sourced directly from the National Grid. The Power PFI is also designed to deliver major power supply upgrades which will support the PPP enhancements.

Connect

The Citylink Telecommunications consortium is required to deliver an entirely new, network-wide integrated digital radio and transmission infrastructure to replace existing ageing and disparate communications systems.

Financial background

Information on progress under the PFI contracts is also contained in LU's PPP reports and TfL's annual report.

More information on investment in the Tube and London's transport network is available in the Investor relations section.
