Transport for London

Operations

London Underground's operational structure is based on the network's Tube lines, and is led by Managing Director Tim O'Toole.

His Chief Operating Officer, Mike Brown, leads a team of two service directors. Ten line general managers report to the service directors, each being responsible for running and improving the performance of trains and stations on their respective lines.

While the line general managers concentrate on the day-to-day running of the service, the service directors look at long-term development and overall network performance. They travel around the Tube network, assessing the issues and complexities unique to each line and working on strategies to address them.

The service directors and line general managers work closely with the Director of Strategy & Service Development, Head of Operational Upgrades and Head of Operational Support, who provide the planning, communications, information and other support necessary to ensure the Tube runs smoothly and continues to improve.

Maximising value

The Chief Programmes Office, led by Geoff Virrels, also works with the operating team. Together, they manage the complex Public Private Partnership and Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts to ensure the private sector infrastructure companies and PFI contractors deliver the promised improvements, and that LU gets maximum value from the contracts.
