Transport for London

Management

London Underground (LU) has been part of Transport for London since July 2003, when it transferred from the Department for Transport and Tim O'Toole was appointed as Managing Director.

Before the transfer, management of the Tube had been restructured, with the introduction of a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement by the Government.

Under the PPP, LU is responsible for operations, running the trains, stations, control centres, ensuring the Tube is safe and secure, and collecting and protecting fares revenue.

At the same time, private infrastructure companies, or infracos, are principally responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the Tube's infrastructure.
