Looking ahead
As outlined in the Mayor's Transport Strategy, and with funding from TfL's £10bn 5-Year Investment Programme (PDF 643KB), we aim to deliver an integrated rail network to facilitate commuting, additional capacity to reduce overcrowding, and a safe and easy to use rail system with frequent services. There are currently 304 rail stations within the Greater London Authority boundary. We are working to raise standards at every station and on trains operating within the boundary by 2009/2010. By April 2006, half of all rail stations will have undergone improvements.
Safety and comfort
Upgrading initiatives aimed at passenger safety and comfort include:
- The installation of CCTV on board trains and at stations to provide a more secure travelling environment for passengers
- The installation of Help points to provide information and access to help during an emergency
- The funding for 45 additional British Transport Police officers on the North London Line to provide extra security and reassurance
- Station enhancements including additional lighting, subway cladding, new waiting shelters and seating, to modernise and brighten station interiors
- The provision of extra trains services to increase capacity and reduce overcrowding
- Improving accessibility at stations and on board trains for mobility-impaired passengers
Future growth
In addition to improving facilities and services, we are entering an exciting phase with the development and support of key rail projects including:
- East London Line
- DLR expansion projects
- Crossrail
- Thameslink
By investing in London's rail network, we are on track to deliver a transport system fit for London's future growth and needs.
