We've extended the old London Underground East London line to Highbury & Islington in the north, New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon in the south, and Clapham Junction in the west, allowing easier access into the City. There's also an easier interchange at Canada Water for the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf and Stratford.

A full service opened on 28 February 2011 between Highbury & Islington and New Cross/Crystal Palace/West Croydon via the City, with Shoreditch High Street station a five-minute walk from Liverpool Street and Bishopsgate. A full service between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction opened on 9 December 2012.

London Overground's new extension across south London between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction station opened on 9 December 2012 and is the final link currently planned on the London Overground orbital network around the capital.

The new stations connecting Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction are:

  • Queens Road Peckham
  • Peckham Rye
  • Denmark Hill
  • Clapham High Street
  • Wandsworth Road

It's the final stage of a £1.5 billion investment to improve the London Overground for a more frequent, reliable and accessible network.

London Overground's new line extension from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction links south east and south west London. With fast frequent services, the new link also opens up new destinations and connections to:

  • Canada Water (for Jubilee line services to Canary Wharf, the West End and Stratford)
  • Clapham High Street (for Northern line services to the City and the West End)
  • Clapham Junction (for services to Victoria, Waterloo, west London, Gatwick Airport and destinations in the south of England)
  • Highbury & Islington (for Victoria line and National Rail services)
  • Shadwell (for DLR services to Bank and Canary Wharf)
  • Shoreditch High Street (for the City)
  • Whitechapel (for District and Hammersmith & City line services)

Explore London by Overground

There are many places to visit along the route from Highbury & Islington to Croydon/Clapham Junction such as Horniman Museum, Shoreditch High Street and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Find out about more by visiting our Explore London Overground map.

The Highbury & Islington to West Croydon/Clapham Junction line has trains running up to every 15 minutes between:

  • Highbury & Islington and Clapham Junction
  • Highbury & Islington and Crystal Palace
  • Dalston Junction and New Cross
  • Dalston Junction and West Croydon

Art on the Orbital

The extension of the line to Clapham Junction has coincided with a fascinating collaboration between the South London Gallery in Peckham and Calvert 22, an independent gallery situated in bustling Shoreditch. They are just two of the many art establishments across east and south London to benefit from the improved links brought about since the Overground has gone orbital.

Bridge House Meadows

Bridge House Meadows has undergone a transformation. We have seeded the meadow and planted a number of trees throughout the grounds. We have also installed a paved and lit subway at both Hornshay Street and Rollins Street, providing easy access to the Meadows.

In agreement with Lewisham Council, we are in the process of finalising the reinstatement of the footpaths and completing the landscaping in time for the opening of the extended line on 9 December.

Surrey Canal Road

Lewisham Council has now granted Renewal, the developer, planning permission for the Surrey Canal Triangle scheme. A funding contribution from Renewal for public transport improvements has also been formally agreed. This includes the funding required to construct Surrey Canal Road station.

Renewal is currently planning to commence their scheme in 2013 subject to change. Surrey Canal Road station could therefore open in 2015 if Renewal progresses their scheme as planned.

For further details regarding Surrey Canal Road, please email jordana@renewalgroup.co.uk or visit http://www.surreycanal.com/

Approval for the scheme

Approval to build the scheme was granted by the Secretary of State under a Transport and Works Act Order in 2001.

Summary of works
  • Some trees and vegetation removed from along the new railway line
  • Footpath between Silwood Street and Hornshay Street closed for the duration of the works
  • Existing footbridge over Surrey Canal Road replaced with a new railway bridge and a pelican crossing at street level
  • Ground levels built up so that the new railway can rise over Surrey Canal Road
  • Station box south of Surrey Canal Road provided so that a station could be built later if funding is found
  • New pedestrian and cycle underpass linking Hornshay Street with Bridgehouse Meadows and John Williams Close
  • New railway track connections to the existing National Rail network
  • Footpath reinstated
  • Bridge House Meadows reinstated and replacement trees planted

Clapham Junction works

Network Rail is also carrying out works at Clapham Junction to convert Platform 2 into two separate platforms to accommodate the existing London Overground services to/from Willesden Junction and Stratford (to be renamed Platform 1) and the new services to/from Highbury & Islington (to be renamed Platform 2).

Existing London Overground and Southern services are now stopping slightly further down the platform.
