In 1971, the first double-decker, one-person operation buses were introduced in London. Removing the need for a conductor meant buses became more economic to run. Routemasters and single-decker, one-person operation buses were also in operation at this time.

The design of these buses is familiar to passengers today as their appearance still has an influence on current bus design.
